From radar to roaming...

Opalport

FOUNDER and CEO of Microwatt (Group), Simon Clegg has given Microwatt a reputation for innovative electronic solutions. Calling on knowledge and expertise gained working on a number of diverse projects. OPALPORT supplied it’s first system to BAA at Gatwick in 1984. This product was a ‘Fixed Ground Power’ (FGP) monitoring system that provided fiscal & technical information. We then supplied Integrated Information Desk equipment (message writer) to Gatwick NT in 1985. Since then we have supplied equipment to all of the larger UK airports including Manchester, Birmingham, Heathrow, Glasgow & Stansted.

It was not long before the ‘message writer’ became known as ‘The Opalport’, learning from our customers, we adopted the name. We have expanded the Opalport business supplying turnkey contracts rather than being a sub-contractor. Our products usage is not limited to transport industries, but also to many other areas (Toyota car manufacturer, MOD sites, Museums, railway & bus companies.). We are now moving into the export arena. In the early days, Microwatt was mainly a consultancy, developing all manner of microprocessor projects from Gaming Machines to tracking Firemen & Police using GPS. More recently we have been able to develop our own products.

Recently MicroWatt Energy has developed a number of energy monitoring devices used in every area from domestic to industrial & commercial to research helping to reduce energy consumption & carbon footprint. Interestingly this developed from the power monitoring of our very first FGP monitoring equipment supplied in the 80’s. We still do consultancy work, for example we designed a smart water meter for Agbar (Spain), 800,000 will be relaying water consumption all over Europe this year. But we now mainly concentrate on our own products. Our development ethos has been rewarded with patents as diverse as; a mathematical model that represented the way a battery discharges which became known as ‘virtual cell’, to a method of optically reading consumption from gas meters (retro-fit ‘Smart Gas Meter).
